Oyster
The Oyster2 is a compact and rugged GPS tracking device that has been designed for tracking containers, trailers, skip bins, and other assets where super-long battery life is required without sacrificing the frequency of updates and performance. The Oyster2 is powered by three easily replaceable consumer grade lithium AA batteries (Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries recommended). If the devices will be used in temperatures below zero for long periods during the winter we recommend using Saft LS14500 AA 3.6 Volt lithium batteries (2600 mAh). The IP-67 rated housing is rugged and UV stable, so the Oyster2 can be mounted on assets that are exposed to rain, dust, and marine conditions.
Yabby Edge
The Yabby Edge uses traditional GPS(GNSS) lookups for tracking with the addition of wifi "sniffing"that senses router nodes and can calculate the location when GPS satellites are not available.( such as inside a building. The battery life on the Yabby Edge is 10 years on once a day reporting. The Yabby is our smallest device fitting in the palm of your hand, and has the IP67 case.
G62
The G62 has all the tracking features of the Oyster2, has an IP67 rated water resistant case and is about the same size as the Oyster2. Instead of replaceable batteries the G62 has been designed to be powered by the onboard asset battery systems, making this device maintenance free. The G62 has an internal backup battery that in the event the external power is disconnected, the G62 will continue to operate on the backup battery for up to 14 days.
Important Tracking Concepts
The GPS Devices are outfitted with an accelerometer and use both motion and GPS movement to determine if they are in trip. The GPS Devices use CAT-M1 (LTE-M) cellular technology to transmit their location data so must be within CAT-M1 cellular coverage to communicate with the Tracking Platform. If outside of coverage they hold many weeks’ worth of records and will report them once back in cellular coverage. Canada, the US and Mexico have robust Cat-M1 networks.
The tracking devices must be able to see three GPS satellites of the over 60 available satellites in order to determine their location. The GPS devices may not be able to determine their location from within buildings or if completely shrouded in metal.
By default, the Oyster uploads its location once per day, whether it moves or not, uploads its location on trip start (travels 250 metres and/or exceeds 15km/h), takes a GPS fix every 2 minutes while in trip, reports its location data every 30 minutes while in trip, and at trip end after 5 minutes with no movement. This is by design to preserve battery life. By default, the G62 reports hourly, whether it moves or not, and while in trip performs an upload every 60 seconds and/or 500 metres of travel, or a heading change of more than 10 degrees over a distance exceeding 150 metres. The reporting parameters for both devices can be changed at our end to best meet your needs.
Recovery Mode
Recovery Mode is a feature that is intended for use if a customer’s asset is stolen and is best suited for use with our battery powered devices such as the Oyster and Yabby. Its purpose is to increase tracking location uploads to enable the speedy recovery of a stolen asset. Some important things to note regarding Recovery Mode:
- Location uploads will increase to approximately every 60 seconds.
- Once initiated by the customer, Recovery Mode does not kick in until the tracking device performs an upload (talks to the cellular network).
- Recovery Mode will shut off 6 hours after the GPS device receives the command to enter Recovery Mode. The customer can reactivate Recovery Mode as needed.
- Recovery Mode will quickly deplete batteries so use it strategically.
- Recovery Mode can be turned off at any time by the customer
Tracking
The devices can be monitored from both the desktop platform and our smartphone app. The devices work across North America and 17 other countries that are on the 4G Cat M-1 (LTE-M) network with no roaming costs.
The App is not as feature rich as the tracking platform but it is very useful for capturing expenses such as fuel, parking, repairs etc. for quickly checking on the location of your assets, setting one time movement alerts, checking recent trip history (categorizing trips if needed), and for activating Recovery Mode should an asset with a battery operated tracking device be stolen. Expenses can also be captured using the tracking platform.
The tracking platform has many features such as scheduled maintenance, expense tracking, trip history, alerts via push notifications and/or email (movement, after hours usage, etc), geofences, etc. and there are also several reports that you may find useful, many of which can be customized and set up to run automatically.
The G62 can be wired directly to the vehicle's battery (red to positive and black to ground) and mounted in the engine compartment or can be hidden elsewhere such as under the dash. I recommend connecting the white ignition wire to a power source that turns on and off with the vehicle as this better captures run hours and excessive idling.
The Oyster can be mounted to the underside of assets or secreted inside. The only caveat for all brands of GPS trackers, is they cannot be fully enclosed by metal i.e. put inside a metal equipment box, as this will affect the units ability to communicate with the GPS satellites and the cell
Our devices come with a 1 year warranty against manufacturer defects.
We provide all the ongoing technical support and training for the platform which is included in the cost of the tracking subscriptions.
